GIO Chapter Suriname Commemorates Keti Koti – 2026

A Day of Freedom, Unity, and Shared History
Paramaribo, July 1, 2026 – Today, GIO Chapter Suriname commemorates Keti Koti, the day marking the abolition of slavery in Suriname on July 1, 1863. It is a moment to honor the resilience, courage, and determination of those who fought for freedom, dignity, and justice.
Suriname’s history is a shared history. Following the abolition of slavery, indentured laborers from India, Java, China, and other parts of the world were brought to Suriname to work on the plantations. Although their experiences and circumstances differed, both the descendants of enslaved Africans and the descendants of indentured laborers have overcome significant hardships and have together contributed to building the diverse and vibrant nation that Suriname is today.
“When we learn about and acknowledge each other’s history, we build understanding and respect. Our diversity is our greatest strength, and together we can create a future founded on unity, equality, and mutual appreciation,” said the Board of GIO Chapter Suriname.
GIO Chapter Suriname wishes everyone a meaningful Keti Koti and encourages all communities to use this day as an opportunity for remembrance, reflection, dialogue, and unity, ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to guide future generations
